About Me
Hi, I’m Art. I am the founder and principal writer here at Artabides.com. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a passion for reading and writing. I’m excited about the new opportunities blogging affords me. It’s a good outlet where I can be creative and express myself. I enjoy blogging, but it’s only one aspect about me. In my day to day I take on many roles. Above all, I am a family man. I am a husband, father, brother, son and uncle to name a few. I am a proud U.S. Army Veteran. I’m also fully employed at a well known national freight company. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I like being out and doing things socially. I enjoy live music and movies and get out to shows as often as I can. I enjoy trying new restaurants and different types of food. I have more hobbies than I actually have time for, some say. Hobbies like playing guitar, archery, fishing, woodworking and now blogging to name a few. I hoping that all these interests and experiences will afford me ample material to blog about. As you visit the site I hope that I can keep you informed, engaged and, most of all, entertained. In return, I hope that you will subscribe to this blog and invite your friends and loved ones to visit and do the same. I would really appreciate that. Doing so will help us continue to flourish and grow.
Maybe In Another Life
The other night my wife and I were sitting on the couch, having drinks and half watching The Pitt. My latest favorite medical drama. As far as doctor shows go, it’s a pretty good one. But I think Robby, the main guy in it, cries way too much. In any case, it was just one…

I turned 52 earlier this week. That number…wow…carries a different weight than it used to. Not necessarily in a negative sense, but in a way that makes me pause a little longer than I once did. When you’re younger, you tend to assume that by the time you reach your 50s, most of life will…

Going Back to School at 50, Working Full-Time, and Finding Time to Write Again Ok, so it’s been a while. Not because I quit. Not because I lost interest. Life just picked up speed and hasn’t really slowed down. I’ve got my 52nd birthday coming up in a few days. When I turned 50, I…

Back in May, I had to have surgery on my shoulder. It was painful, and the recovery took a lot longer than I expected — about three months. For the first time since high school, I found myself with an entire summer off and not a whole lot that I could do. I’m not great…

When Fall Doesn’t Feel Like Fall—but Still Feels Like Home Fall in South Texas is kind of a joke. Around here, we like to say we only get two seasons: Summer and Winter. And Winter barely sticks around for two weeks. No fiery foliage like up North. Just a quiet creep—more suggestion than season. Still,…

Fall in South Texas isn’t just a season. It’s a sigh of relief. After months of triple-digit heat and humidity that clings to you like a wet steaming blanket, that first crisp Fall breeze feels like a miracle. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it is I love about Fall. There’s a lot there to…

When Writing Feels Like Work Some days, writing feels like therapy. Other days, it feels like unpaid overtime. There are days when I sit down to write and have absolutely no idea what to say. I like writing. I really do. But sometimes it feels like a chore, especially when it’s for the blog. It…

Horror has always been my genre of choice. Cheap jump scares or blood-soaked spectacles? Meh, not for me. I like the kind of horror that lingers, that tells a story. I grew up on Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees. Real horror. Plot-driven horror. And while recent years seem to target teen audiences with…

My First Game at Fenway Park I didn’t know about the Curse. I didn’t know much about the team. At the time, I didn’t even like baseball. But the moment I stepped into Fenway Park in the summer of 2000, everything changed. Back then, I was working for a telecom company that sent me all…

A cozy classic that’s kid-approved and holiday-tested At our house we do an Italian feast for Christmas. It’s become tradition. By the time Christmas comes around we’ve had our fill of tamales and buñuelos that we’re ready for something different. This lasagna has quietly earned its place at our Christmas table. Not as the main…

Anniversary Elegance & Culinary Trade-offs One of my all-time favorite movies is The Family Man. There’s a scene where Jack, having forgotten his wedding anniversary, whisks his wife off to an extravagant dinner in the city. She glances at the menu and asks, “Jack, can we afford this place?” His response? “I’m taking my Baby…

There’s something sacred about comfort food—especially the kind that wraps around your childhood like a warm tortilla. For me, it’s chicken flautas. My mom made them regularly. We didn’t have much growing up. But chicken and corn tortillas were cheap. With a little work we’d have a ourselves a feast. Flautas were the first dish…

I didn’t come up with it but I’ve said the phrase many times throughout my adult life. “Comparison is the thief of joy”. Mostly, I’ve whispered it to myself when I felt like I wasn’t making enough money. When I didn’t feel like I had enough things. Or Sometimes I just plain didn’t feel like…
